The dream for Alohana Acai Bowls originated on a surf trip to Mexico in 2015. While sitting by the campfire, founders Pete McAfee and Robert O'Quinn began chatting about the lack of healthy food options available in the market. Growing up surfing, skateboarding, snowboarding, cycling and other outdoor activities, those childhood passions eventually turned into professional endeavors for both Robert & Pete eventually leading to careers that spanned decades in the Action Sports & Outdoor Industries by the time that momentous surf trip to Mexico occurred. Having already attended countless industry tradeshows at that point in their lives – and being limited to the highly processed, typically fried and generally unhealthy food options offered during those massive exhibitions – Pete and Robert knew they had a calling to solve the problem of providing better, healthier food alternatives. This began their quest to bring you the taste of Aloha infused with the spirit of Action Sports and Outdoor living in the form of Alohana Acai Bowls . . . fresh and healthy since inception!

Following their camping excursion in Mexico, the Alohana journey began to materialize with the purchase of the very first Alohana mobile food trailer. From there, a transformative road trip to the Outdoor Retailer tradeshow in Salt Lake City, UT (with the first-ever trailer in tow), set the stage for what was to come. The overwhelming response to the bowls they served during that inaugural tradeshow fueled their dedication to crafting the perfect Acai Bowl with a focus on wholesome, superfood ingredients. The result? The Alohana Acai Bowl — a harmonious blend of nutritious food, vibrant aesthetic, delicious taste and a surplus of good vibes.

Fast forward to today, Robert spearheads a handful of stores & multiple mobile units throughout the Orange County market (from San Clemente up to Huntington Beach), including the opening of the very first Alohana flagship brick and mortar store in downtown San Clemente back in December 2020 (yes, during the height of the pandemic 😊). Pete leads the Alohana brand in San Diego County across six locations including North Park in San Diego all the way north to Camp Pendleton, along with multiple mobile units that you'll likely see at events across the region. As of 2023, Chad Crites – Action Sports industry veteran, longtime business partner and close friend to Pete and Robert – joined the Alohana brand as an owner/partner focused on expanding Alohana's reach into Riverside County and beyond, which already includes the newest location to the Alohana store lineup located in Murrieta, CA opened in early 2026.

What sets us apart? For starters, we've changed the game with each of our proprietary sorbet bases: Acai, Pitaya, Zero Sugar and Power (Protein). In partnership with our cherished supplier (certified Biologist/Chemist and Nutritionist), we've developed a traditional Acai base with approximately 30% less sugar than what's typically offered in the market. We also created the first-ever Zero Sugar Acai Base, which is entirely organic and contains absolutely no added sweeteners. We also feature an exclusive Pitaya base that's a combination of Dragon Fruit with a hint of Raspberry and makes for a mouthwatering and beautiful presentation. Lastly, with feedback from many of our active-duty military customers, we crafted and introduced a market-defining Protein Acai, which we call our "Power" base. Originating as a solution for the Marines at Camp Pendleton, our Power Protein Acai base has since become a favorite across each of our locations with its creamy and chocolatey flavor.

For Pete, Robert and Chad – who each remain passionately involved in the day-to-day operations of the Alohana brand – the mission is clear: to spread good vibes through healthy food choices to as many people as possible.
